Options
After
reading the following list of the options available, you may become confused
as how to order the item your interested in. Here are some hints. If you want
to install a switchable light in an exterior position, order the waterproof
switch feature. If you want more illumination, order a longer glass globe. For
instance, the 7 globe will allow up to 100-watt bulb use, (click on Specifications
to see wattage ratings). If the light does not need a local switch, order the
less expensive remote switch style. In short, think about how you would like
to use the light to guide your order. These fixtures were originally designed
for maximum parts interchangeability to allow for any style configuration. This
flexibility made life much easier at the building and maintenance shipyards,
(and easier for us to reconfigure if needed). For complete specifications on
these lights, click on Specifications. Some of these lights and
their spare parts were removed from the tugboat Patrick J. McHugh,
prior to its deliberate sinking off the coast of New Jersey. The tug is
now an artificial reef providing needed sanctuary for sea life. For a more comprehensive
description about the history of this and other vessels, visit the Tugboat
page. To determine the item and option prices, please visit our "How
To Order" page.
Bulkhead (wall) Light
Fixtures:
- All locally switched
lights can be ordered with waterproof, or non-waterproof switches as desired.
(Warning!!!! Non-waterproof switched lights are for indoor use in areas that
have no explosive fumes present.) For the cost of this and other choices,
click on the How To Order section.
- Most light fixtures have
threaded ½ inch holes for wire anchors, or conduit pipes.
- The wall-mounting surface
can be ordered with a centered ½ inch
threaded hole for inside wall wire installation.
- One threaded ½
inch brass watertight cable gland, (wire anchor) is included with each light
fixture. Any extra threaded holes will have polished brass plugs installed.
- Additional brass wire
anchors are available if desired. (These are compression type anchors that
are meant for use with correctly sized marine round wire cables only.)
- Extra polished brass
plugs for unused threaded holes are available.
- All non-berth lights
normally include a 6-inch clear glass globe and a 6-inch bronze guard. All
berth (bunk) lights normally include a 4-inch white frosted glass globe and
a brass light shade that can be rotated to reduce glare. Longer glass globes
and longer bronze guards are available if desired. Longer globes allow the
use of higher wattage lamps. (For the wattage-rating list, click on the Specification
section.)
- The glass globes can
also be ordered, as an option, with color tinting. (Ruby red, emerald green,
amber yellow, and cobalt blue). Some nautically minded people have installed
these as a pair flanking the their front door, (one red, one green). White
frosted glass is available in several lengths for lights where glare is objectionable,
such as lights used for reading.
- Cast bronze and cast
iron junction boxes are available for buyers that want to run a circuit to
more than one exterior light with a wall switch, and still have plenty of
room for the extra wire connections. These boxes have two or more threaded
access holes for multiple wire runs. (Threaded conduit pipes will be needed
for this use, or correctly sized marine round cable with the brass anchors.)
- After complete refurbishment,
the final step is to burnish the metal surface to an illumination catching
golden glow, pleasing to the eye. If desired, the cast light housing, (not
the bronze guards) can be smoothed and highly polished, as scheduling permits.
(On vessels this was only done in VIP areas.)
- A metal surface-sealing
coat of lacquer can be applied if desired. All bulkhead style lights can be
mounted on a mahogany base and wired for table lamp use, if desired, (with
non-waterproof, or waterproof switches as desired).
- A brass 4-inch by 1½
-inch engraved plate can be installed on the mahogany, with the tugboats
name and years of service, or any other desired presentation script.
Overhead Light Fixtures:
- Most of the preceding
information for the bulkhead lights also applies to this style of light fixture.
- The main exception is
that this style of light is not suitable for modification to a
table lamp, since the base is designed for overhead (ceiling) mounting, it
just wouldnt
look right.
- Another exception is
that most overhead light fixtures did not have local switches. (Non-waterproof,
non-explosive environment local switches for these lights are available if
desired.)
- All overhead light fixtures
are mounted on a bronze junction box.
Glass Globes (Lens) Choices:
- 6-inch length

- Cobalt Blue
- Amber Yellow
- 7-inch length

Portholes:
- There are only two options
offered for the 10-inch and 16-inch portholes:
- The first option
is to install a round mirror over the glass lens. There are two prices
listed in the How to Order page. These prices are determined
on the condition of the portholes lens.
- The second option
is for a lacquered coating to be applied to the burnished metal surfaces,
as a tarnish resistant sealer.
- Another way for the buyer
to employ these portholes is to use the outside of the lens as a mounting
place for pictures and photographs. Your local glass repair shop can install
a 1/8-inch thick glass cover pane to encase the picture.
- Warning!!! These portholes
are quite heavy and require the use of sufficiently sized screws that must
be screwed into your wall frame studs, or other wood surfaces that can bear
these weighty items.
- Warning!!! In the home
or office, these portholes must be mounted with the lens hinge to the left
or right side, not on top, as normally mounted on vessels. A dropped solid
brass swing plate with its lens will break your head or fingers, guaranteed!
